The Smile Torch Journey

Smile Train

600,000+ cleft surgeries, 150+ partner hospitals, an expanding comprehensive cleft care program, and a world class training hub – we have had an exciting two decades!

To celebrate our journey of smiles in India, Smile Train launched a unique initiative – The Smile Torch. Across traditions, light is symbolic of positivity. For us, the Smile Torch is a metaphor for dispelling the darkness of myths, fallacies and social stigma surrounding clefts. The Torch was launched in Varanasi in 2019 on February 8, National Cleft Day, and is travelling across India, symbolically generating awareness about clefts and our work in ameliorating them. The Smile Torch will culminate its journey in Delhi on February 8, 2020, to officially mark 20 years of Smile Train in India!

As we countdown to the New Year, the Smile Torch has been travelling enthusiastically and has lit up smiles in Assam and North-eastern states, West Bengal, Uttarakhand,  Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Punjab so far! The events have included smile walks, awareness lectures, flash mobs and fashion shows, rangoli and drawing competitions, screening camps, and media interviews. Several of these have been attended by government dignitaries, celebrities, and partner doctors to show their commitment to our cause. To keep track of the Smile Torch’s journey, follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!
